Outline for Motivating Adult Learners

1. What is an Adult Learner?

Wikipedia defines the adult learner as any individual who is expected as an adult in society and is in a learning process. They fall into the field of non-traditional students due to but not limited to the characteristics that follows:

· Enrollment into the learning environment may not immediately follow high school graduation.

· Enrollment is usually only part time for some of the academic year.

· Enrollment is in addition to full time employment.

· Students are considered financially independent.

· Students usually have dependents other than a spouse.

2. From Pedagogy to Andragogy

Pedagogy: Greek – “child-leading”

Andragogy: Greek- “man-leading”

When discussing the motivation of adult learners it is necessary to understand that adults need to know the reason for their learning, they have prior knowledge which gives them a strong foundation for learning, they make decisions and have accountability for their involvement, they are educating themselves in areas that have direct impact on their work environment, and they are problem solvers with internal motivators who require a great amount of self direction.
